How did someone discover this?
It is definitely a "hold my beer" moment, but the beer hasn't been opened yet!

My three brothers and I have been 'one upping' each other for decades on the creative beer opening game, I will perfect this before I see them next.

I think the keys to success are; The quality and age of the tape measure, the length you have the tape extended initially. The angle you hold the tape in relation to the cap, and how firmly you hold the bottle.

Also note, in reference to and earlier thread regarding the sliding hook on your tape measure, using your tape in this manner may accuracy of your measurements. But then so will all of the beers you have to open perfecting the process

I wonder if the bottle had been opened already and the cap set back in place. It doesn't seem to me that it would have enough energy to remove the cap.

note the side of the bottle the tape is on, should be tightening instead of removing from that position, or do bottles now have left hand threads

I was not thinking of it as a screw on cap. I was thinking old school, crimped on cap that you pry off. I am ashamed to say, it has been so long since I had a bottle of beer that I have no idea if they even make the old style anymore.

Also, the width and thickness of the tape... needs mass too pop that crimped cap off...

Most of the imported beers and premium domestics like Samuel Adams and other craft beers have the old type caps.
