Not only does this style of riveting use less force the desired finish is a lot more predictable. for making the pivots in things like pliers the body does not swell much like a blacksmith would do to make a tong where he primarily only heats the end to be flattened of crowned and make numerous small hammer strikes instead of just banging it flat.
But for making rivet connections in structures or pressure vessels it is still preferred to heat the rivets read hot then buck them this makes a more secure connection by swelling the body as well as crowning the head
