Just one big Van de Graaff generator. Van de Graaff voltage multiplication is pretty cool. Lets say you have two conductors and they have some difference in charge. If you pull the conductors apart the voltage between them will increase. Want to see some Van de Graaff voltage multiplication in action? If you have any of those old spindles of CD-Rs kicking around, hold the base and grab the top CD then pull it straight up quickly. If the humidity is low enough it'll make a small spark pretty much every time.
