Looks like they tried their inaugural flight a little before they had the thing completely finished. I didn't see any directional control vanes behind the propeller.
Altitude would have been controlled by throttle but without any directional control save for pulling on static lines their abilities to avoid obstacles would be limited

And I still didn't see any flight controls but surely they had something like what is shown here
