This is another popular sport in the Middel East like falconry and dancing pigeons. They raise the birds and train them similar to homing birds. For the competitions everyone has their birds loaded in the pigeon release truck it is driven out into the desert to be released while they sit at home waiting their return. the leg tag of each bird is logged at time of arrival the guy who has the most birds to return and the quickest return times is the winner. A Bedouin friend of mine often made a huge amount of money in slightly less than legal side bets from his racing birds some legal money as well. Once he had 48 of 50 birds make the return trip of 200 KM some made it back several hours before anyone else's birds. His birds were in high demand among many of the Shieks. He had some world class dancing pigeons as well
