Plane builds like this bring one back to the time when things were much simpler. No GPS, not even hydraulics, and rudimentary instrumentation. Must have really focused the pilot, what with some pesky enemy pilot looking to bring you down. It's quite fascinating to see the progress of aeronautics, from (as we now see it) rudimentary builds like these, to modern designs that can't even take to the air without fly-by-wire controls.
