Used one similar to this that will do 3" SS pipe at work a couple of years ago. Nifty piece of kit, as they say. Not something my home workshop will ever have. Even temporarily.

They work great! We had to replace about 100' of steam line, and another 200 or so of hot water line, 3" stainless steel pipe, in an industrial laundry plant. neither of which can tolerate a leak. The old plumbing was welded SS at least 40 years old, and it was leaking. Very disconcerting to find steam or 175 degree F leaks in 3" line. VERY!

If I recall correctly, techs used to wave a stick of wood in front of them when looking for leaks in steam plants. The superheated steam was invisible, but it would cut (?) through the stick and warn the worker where the leak was.
Something like that. It's been a long time...

Our next door neighbors in the sixties had a swimming pool, pretty uncommon in that area.
Story was workers comp insurance paid for it, as therapy for the father who got terribly burned by a steam explosion.
Again, it's been a long time.

My brother was foreman at a steam power plant, said they used a straw broom. If the bristles fell off, you stopped right there.
