WOAH! What's this now? Do you have a PTO on your lathe? I like it.
that's been around for a while. Very creative mind!
Today I've seen videos of a lathe turning flat sided polygons and another lathe turning ovals. I'm beginning to suspect witchcraft or other trickery. Who let a Fae write the second edition of "How to run a lathe"?
Joking aside, it's a very clever bit of kit. If I could spend a day with it I'd crank out a pile of square and hex rotary broach dies. They are absurdly expensive to buy, and this makes it trivial to manufacture them. You could do them in a single setup if you had a form tool in the tailstock to dish the ends, then turn the side profiles, and an upside-down parting tool on the rear of the cross slide to pop them off.
Does anyone know how the math works of determining what shape a given cutter and spindle gear ratio will make on a part? Is it just 3:1 to make a triangle? I don't understand the geometry.
Excellent explanation by Tony Foale here last year.
