    anyone know what is being "swabbed" onto the die prior to the brass billet being placed? Is it water to cool the die, or some form of "non-stick" to ease mold release?

    I think it’s a mold release agent. Water would evaporate too quickly.

    Hard to believe that an ingot that small would be enough for a part of that size, along with what appears to be a good bit of excess around the top edge. It seems that the trunk and supports would use up nearly all of it. No obvious cuts in that GIF, so I'll trust my lying eyes.
