    A proper Urn

Finished a special request Saturday night, a real Urn for my oldest friend, by his son who I've known almost as long. The normal plastic container would not do!
I started by estimating volume of ashes, approximately 168 cu in. His wife is to receive about 75%, to distribute as she travels. That's about 120 cu in. The first feature was to make it possible to open, yet seal securely between times.

Mr. P was an extraordinary man from a family of well known plumbers. His specialty was fire suppression systems, associated pumps and drivers, a life-long hot rodding gearhead, along with anything mechanical. So, we looked to symbolize the most important aspects of him.
So this connecting rod, A proper Urn-rod.jpg
while not from an engine but a fluid pump became the frame. The vessel itself was a 6" sweated copper cap, a short length of 'L' copper tubing, a slip ring, high grade gasket , fire pump flange (yes, a record groove seal on both faces), O-ringed station cap with chain, 4 studs and nuts. The 4 hardware bits represent each of his children.

This is mock up before sandblast and paint, and a stand to keep it up right.
The Urn proper is removable to aid dispensing his ashes.

Very nice tribute! I bet that thing weighs quite a bit by itself.
