Might be useful but I can see how that could be dangerous. On a work site, you bump that bucket against something on the way down it releases and drops the bucket.
If the hook is not going to have a safety catch on it, you can make it unhook with a quick twitch of the rope. If you are good you can even set one bucket down, release it, then pick up a different bucket from the top of a scaffold with a rope and a regular hook.
Yep probably completely serviceable for his use but I'll just stick with my carbineer on a rope for now.
