Replacement handle (forged) for plastic handle (broken) on new welder

This pathetic piece of brittle plastic is supposed to bear the weight of a 15kg portable arc welder. It arrived broken, so I have made a replacement in steel.
I count myself very fortunate that I have the facility to do this. I do not know another way of making one. What would you do?

Plumber's tape and a piece of whittled or sabersawn wood would also do. Your way is more elegant, and is actually what I'd have done, though it might be cold forged instead of hot.

I understood that. It's very similar to the one on my HF fluxcore welder. Possibly identical. I have a stack of modifications I want to do to it, and replacing the rather flimsy handle is only one of them. AFTER I get all the machine tools running. Been a long while already, probably an unreasonably longer time to go. Once upon a time it was readily accessible. Not quite so now.
