A sound suppressor does not create a blockage in the end of a barrel it directs the flow of supersonic gases into a series of washer like disks allowing the projectile to pass through the hole in the center. The potato on the other hand is going to block the air in front of the bullet which will cause a near instantaneous spike in pressure both in front of and behind the bullet when the weapon is fired
Never try to tell me it can't be done

My question would be. if the guy had any knowledge of how firearms function why would he purposefully plug the end of the barrel with a potato in the first place and if he had very little or no knowledge then where was the adult supervision? Surely there was someone nearby with at least a general knowledge of the ballistic forces involved when firing a weapon with a plugged barrel

I know of someone that made an adapter to fit a oil filter to the barrel to make a sound suppressor. It worked...

That's a handy tidbit of information.

In regards to so called silencers, suppressors, or mufflers attached to the muzzle of a firearm, it is best to bone up on your state's firearm laws. Many states have ambiguous laws conflicting with the federal overreaching unconstitutional laws concerning firearms. Here in Texas for example we have HB957 which means I can make my own without any fear of repercussions from any state official it does not mean that the federal Gestapo cannot attempt to prosecute but they have no authority to force any Texas law enforcement to assist them in investigation or apprehension of a Texas citizen for possession of any unregistered sound suppressing device, excepting of course should such a device be used in the conduction a crime. I've seen them for sale in gun stores and I know a couple of custom rifle manufactures who make them. You have to fill out the normal forms as you would to buy a firearm but there is no registration or licensing required, you may or may not be asked or required to pay for the $200.00 tax stamp, Pawnshops generally will not purchase or resale them, but real gun dealers might but only after you fill out a questioner. Don't even think about trying to buy a sound suppressing device in Texas with an out of state ID or address

It would still need an FFA supressor permit.

There again a lot depends on the state and the state's interpretation of the continuality of the fed's law as opposed to how the state's constitution is written The BATF enforces the federal laws but in many cases does respect a state's laws
