It happens to horses and cows as well. A horse with its legs pointing down a gentle slope will have a lot of trouble standing.

I hadn't heard the term "cast" before but I've seen a number of "Doc Pol" episodes where the vets had to maneuver an animal upright.

Grew up on a cattle and horse ranch, the horse will have the above problem, where a Mule will not, which is why we rode mules into the back country to fix fence, count heads, etc. They are stronger, smarter, less prone to illness, will eat stuff that would kill a horse, and more than once I have watched a big Jack light into a mountain lion and kill it so fast it was amazing.
