Can anyone elaborate on what material they are using and what the flame near the spout or tip is about? It would seem to be a modified paint or even plastic substance?

the material is called Thermoplastic. Its melted in the hopper with a flame under it. The little fire at the bottom is a heater that keeps the "shoe" hot enough so that the thermoplastic doesn't cool and clog.
