Sometimes this device is used for demonstrations in elementary physics classes...

It's relatively easy to build one for yourself. There is a bit of mathematics involved in determining the relation between

the cone angle
the rail angle
the inclination angle of the rails

needed to make the device work...

I remember a penny arcade game from years ago that worked on the same principle. The object was to get the steel ball to the far end of the table without having it fall through. I don’t recall ever succeeding.
