Not seeing the advantage off that.

I enjoy an innovative solution as much as anyone. but as low pitch as that roof, and the fact they have a small scaffold, in that situation I would just lift the shingles to the scaffold, then to the guy on the roof. In regard to energy expended, it seems they are wasting a lot there, friction on the slide, the rope and pullies, the distance they guy has to run for each lift.

They have 3 lifts anyway, pallet to slide, slide to top, then slide to ridge. If they did pallet to scaffold, scaffold to roof, roof to ridge, they eliminate all the friction of the slide. Still have to lift the shingles the same height, and they eliminate the guy running while pulling that rope.

Sometimes the more simple solution is the best.

Maybe it's about human efficiency. We are very efficient with squats or lifting below the waist but very poor above the waist and overhead. The slide is less than 45 degrees so the shingle weight is less than half actual weight. The slide pallet is on rollers or wheels. There is no friction to speak of. So the man on the ground is only lifting 100% shingle weight about 1/2 his height to the slide. Lifting all the weight to the scaffold would require an almost overhead lift! It's the old "mechanical advantage" idea. Convert distance and time to reduce force. Besides, it looks like the guy on the ground could use a little walking/running exercise! LOL.

I have often just carried the shingles on my shoulder, up a ladder on a much higher roof.

    For that ONE day! LOL
How about doing it at least once or twice a week, every week, all year long!

I actually tore roofs off for a two man roofing crew when I was 16. One of them carried all the shingles up (his name was Art something), one on each shoulder and climbed the ladder like stairs (no 3 points of contact for him!). They roofed at least 2 houses a week during the spring, summer, and fall. It took us almost as long to tear off, de-nail and clean up as it did for them to roof the house. I saw him slip once. He dropped one bundle and grabbed the side of the ladder, swore a few times then carried the bundle he saved to the peak and headed back down for 2 more. Luckily we weren't doing clean-up under the ladder when he lost it.
