Thank you! I must have missed this when first posted. To say the least I'm amazed. So I have to ask what is the difference between a rope and a cable, I was under the impression they are one in the same but that obviously isn't the case from this conversation.
AS for that ship model, all I cna say is wow. I often wonder how I would ever produce a decent steam engine model before I die. This model looks to be 100 times more complex!!!
A cable has a core with the layes twisted around it, a rope has no core. As for the ship model, yes it is complicated so you just have to take your time. I love doing the research and learning the history of the ships. Ship modeling will keep your brain working. Dave.
Your machine is very cool.
My son recently sent me this video about a 400 year old rope making factory still using the original equipment. Some fascinating information about the old ships, as well as the rope making process.

Nice work.
Once again that design is amazing. I just noticed a couple of things in your original post that I did not see before.
1) Did your wife get upset when you took the motor off of her Mix Master? :)
2) I see you are an elevator mechanic. That sparked fun memories of an old friend who worked for Otis Elevator for a long time. He was very creative also. As well as a bit crazy. In the 60's he put a full blown hemi from a dragster into a 17 ft flat bottom boat,An early version of todays drag boats. In the late 70's some guy with too much money made him an offer he could not refuse. At a party in the 90's he announced, "I want to go fast one more time before I die. The next thing we knew, he had installed a helicopter gas turbine into boat.
This was his last creation, I wish I had more photos of it;

We all need some smiles during these crazy times.
Very nice machine. I imagine you could use sisal instead of cotton thread to create realistic cordage for model ships. Have you looked into supplying the model ship market?
