I always thought the strands were twisted the opposite direction the rope are twisted. the opposite twists are what keep the rope together.

You are correct.

Ordinarily we think of ropes being done as you guys have stated, however there is also what is called the lang lay.

This is usually reserved for wire rope but completely uncommon in hem, cotton, sisal, nylon or polypropylene cordage
Right regular lay the individual strings would wrap to the left while the strands wrap to the right left regular lay is the inverse but lang lay the strings and strands are twisted in the same direction. There is yet another although rarer called lang/regular lay sometimes this method might be found in larger diameter cordage where 3,4,5,6, up to 8 thinner ropes or cordages are wound as lang lay ropes in 3 to 5 strands of dozens of strings to become the super strands of the large ropes wound as conventional regular left right or right left twisting's
