I worked as a Cabinetmaker for many years when I was younger. The quickest cheapest way to glue on edge banding in huge quantities was with packing tape pretty much exactly like the elastic band was doing. The good quality tape has a bit of stretch and it applied enough pressure to keep everything lined up and tight. Made hundreds upon hundreds of shelves like this. A thousand is being conservative.

If you have no clamps packing tape can even hold a box together with enough clamping force to work out just fine.
