A Rugged Low-Cost Fractal Optical User Interface

For many months, I've been thinking about how to display the battery charge level on my eBike. As I lived with past iterations, I have refined what I want. This is a classic case of "I'll know what I want when you give me what I asked for."

This new design displays all integers from 0 to 9, is very rugged, costs under $1, can be read at a glance even in full sunlight, and draws about 1 milliamp. It has a two-wire interface and is easily driven by an Arduino compatible ATtiny85 with very little code.
