    Only one recommendation. Manual flatting/ lapping/ honing share one action; one stroke should be countered by the next crossing at 30° to 45°. Otherwise, succeeding a portion of abrasive are not cutting at all, about 30%. A very typical motion is repeated figure 8's. Another lifts at ends of stroke, lift to return, setting down as mentioned, angled to prior stroke.
    The evidence is just like engine cylinder work, both patterns are visible.
    Upon finishing, via increasingly fine abrasives, straight strokes erase the initial 'roughing'.
