I am ashamed to say I have messed this up before.

This is the way to do it alright. If I have a deck job that requires many of these I use an appropriate length 2 x 4 to keep all the saddles inline. Sometimes they like to move around a little. That can be quite a problem when you want to install support beams.

They will be in a line as long as you to not touch the string with any of the brackets as you move along. Elevation must not be critical in this situation.

You need be sure you know what the critical tolerances are before you choose any method of setting things in concrete.

Yep. No builders level shown or LASER. I missed that. The level is definitely critical.
