Certainly faster crimping the aglets on than my lighter sealing the ends of para cord to make boot laces to suit my work and walking boots, can't buy the right length laces easily, and the para-cord lasts a lot longer too.

There's an antique shoelace machine at City Museum in St Louis that you can watch in operation, then buy the shoelaces you watched being made. It's one of the machines left over from when the building was a shoe factory, and it makes a very cool noise. It's a very cool machine in one of the most wonderful interactive art installations on the planet.
