    Around these parts our shopping trolleys have flanged wheels and the escalators have narrow grooves that the flanged wheels drop in to and bind the wheels to prevent errant runaways

    These are standard fare in the IKEA stores. Pointed pegs that come in from the sides and engage the carts. The cart conveyor also goes slightly slower than the escalator so you get there just before your cart arrives.
