    They are made as you mentioned - Much like a wooden barrel, concrete stave silos are made of small precast concrete blocks locked together by their ridged grooves along each edge, creating a high strength shell. Concrete is much stronger in compression than in tension, so steel hoops encircling the tower are used to reinforce and compress the staves into a tight ring.

    Thank you, Dollar Bill! Back home, we used horizontal silos for silage, and a few farmers had steel vertical silos for grain. I've seen these concrete ones from a distance, but I always assumed they were made with slip formed reinforced concrete.
