Interesting process, thanks for sharing. I'm interested in the belt sander as I've never seen one like that. Did you make of modify it?
One things for sure this guy is no novice when it making an assessment of damage then creating a solution for repair.
Nice simple tool and great skills in repairing, very nicely done.
Brilliant idea. Excellent job done by professional.
Well commercially there is Dynabrade, and another common to moldmakers, can't recall name. Anyway, I'm betting skateboard bearings and a crowned poly wheel could be driven by right angle grinder, just a scaled down belt sander. The belts come short as 12'' or so and narrow, 3/8'' to 1/2'' wide, not just abrasive, Scotchbright and felt too.
I just finished taking this dent out of a Titanium motorcycle exhaust.
Interesting tricks in that video!! Just ordered the sander....THANK YOU!!

Excellent work ! :clapping:
Godt gjort!
Olav I don't mean to derail your post or take anything away from your DIY tools, but I've never seen a pipe sander before. Most of my life I've done metal work, but not much having to do with stainless. I had to do some refitting of some stainless fruit guides on a fruit sizer and it of course messed up the brushed finish. I found out they had a special horizontal abrasive drum on a variable speed angle grinder that could repair the finish. And without that our regular flap disc's had no way to make that style of finish. And just like with the fruit guide, trying to do the repair like you did would not look just like new without that particular sander.
So when I did a search for a hand held belt sander I only came up with ones I was familiar with. Not until I went back and reread your reply did I notice "pipe sander". That brought up a whole slew of machines like yours. And the prices are staggering, the cheapest was almost $200 and going up to around $1500! So in my mind a DIY version of this type of sander as a bolt on attachment to my Makita 4 1/2" grinder is a worthy future project. If I was doing this kind of work all the time I could see buying one, but it's not something I do a lot of. But thank you for bringing it to my attention.
Amazon has the sander with forty belts in four different grits for $188 Amazon Prime. Mine will be here Tuesday.
Laborious but practical and beautiful result ! Olav, you are the best !
Wow, great video showing the repair process and results.
Got to remember Pipe Sander.
Seems like one could make one with a angle grinder ...
Ralph
First, I would like to thank you all for your kind comments:)
Then:
I have actually made such a sander for angle grinder a while ago. The speed of an angle grinder is too high so it must be regulated down, as I have done with gears, as you can see in the picture. It works fine so I'll make some safety covers around the gears.

In lieu of using a small right angle grinder to make one of these pipe sanders a rt angle polisher could be used many come with variable speed and their max RPM is only around 3000 RPM or less
You can use one of those Router Speed Controllers from Harbor Freight (or elsewhere) to regulate the speed of the angle grinder. Those router controllers will turn single speed universal brush motors into variable speed tools. You can even use one on a shop vacuum to decrease suction.

Very impressive! Bill
The best ideas are often the simplest, and this is one of the very best, and excellently executed. The regular alternative to your process is replacement, and that is very spendy! Well done, and thank you for sharing.
Mike
Great. Simple and elegant.
Very nice workmanship!
The comments prompted me to look around a bit. Pragmatic Lee does a build on you tube of a 30 inch pipe sander/polisher that I am going to build. He built it to fit an angle grinder. Very do-able!
Looks great A++ job
Brilliant solution and elegantly simple.
