He could suffer from sleep apnoea, it's far more common than people realize. It's not unheard of for a driver to doze off at traffic lights due to hazardously inadequate sleep.

It's also worrying that the guy in the background didn't look up when the impact happened, it wasn't until the racks started emptying on the ground that he showed any reaction.
