I would agree; I'll bet the type of wood is very important, although I think that the technique can be done with a decent variety of wood.

The table is a bit rich for my blood, but these vases are interesting, and, while not cheap, they're not absurd at $120 each. Glass tube inside:
This bookend shows off the aesthetic nicely. Kinda ornate for my style, but I think it plays cleverly on the appearance of an open book with its pages leafed.
