Damascus Steel was originally made somewhere around 1500 years ago I think. Somewhere in the Near East Made from 2 different grades of steel imported from other regions to make swords. What you generally do is take a lower and a higher grade steel layer them together then forge weld them by heating to white hot then hammering it out and folding it onto itself several times or even twisting the many folded layers then forging that into a bar to make the tool out of. The result of the process makes a unique pattern of differing colored lines in the metal which makes the metal very strong and durable. Modern foundries can make steels much stronger than ancient Damascus steels though by adding varying amounts of different elements into the molten metal then pour and forge that into ingots. But it is still a favored craft among blade smiths to mix things like steel cable with ball bearings to make something called Birds eye Damascus The intricate unique patterns in the blades can be visually enhanced by etching the blade with acid Quite impossible to ever create 2 exactly the same patterns.
There was a time when gunsmiths made rifle barrels out of twisted Damascus back in the black powder days
