There hulls were made of titanium, an extremely strong metal and light weight. Titanium is as strong as steel but 45% lighter. Titanium has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of all known metals. The Alfa-class was the fastest attack submarine ever built, reaching a submerged speed of 41 knots.
