Confirmed with my wife, she grew up in Ukraine during the soviet era. They taught this class to all kids starting in their 8th grade and they did it every year. As part of the class they also went to a shooting range and learned marksmanship also. They were actually graded as well.

It looks like the students at the second desk on the left are working on a PPSh-41.
