I work in a foundry like this and can tell you want happened here.

Casting machines are on a slight angle so the molten iron can be poured into them and the mold is filled up as it spins. At the bottom or bell end of the mold a sand core is inserted into the mold to keep the molten iron from being thrown out of the mold.

Once in a while these sand cores have a small crack in them and break when the iron is introduced like in the gif. which sends molten iron spraying everywhere. This happens once in a while and the metal is around 2000 degrees F when it's poured in the mold. That **** stays hot for a long time when it gets down your shirt.
