    anyone know the deal with the twisted "wire" on the operator side of the flat belt pulley?

    Yes when running flat belt drives with the half twist in the belt for opposite rotation of the overhead shaft depending on the distance between the machine and the drive shaft you may need a guide to keep the belt on . That is what the wire looking bracket is doing
