Very creative laziness, Rick. (BTW, creative laziness is a good thing; it leads to all kinds of inventive tools and procedures.)
Another approach that I've used is to hold the nut in the vise and chuck the threaded rod in the drill. Since I've never had an occasion to use any rod bigger than 3/8" that works for me.
Reminds me of my powered watch winder using a power screw driver...
