    SMED!
    (single minute exchange of dies)

A critical piece of Lean Manufacturing.

The longer the setup time, the more parts you'll be tempted to run in a batch = bad idea!

SMED yes, once it's on deck. Pulling from inventory a wee bit longer. But faster than ever done before, even with removal of prior tool [not shown]. Index ready tooling is available for dies of most any size, molds aren't so fast yet.

At a plant I where I used to work, the press molds had to be bolted in by hand, which required a lot of adjusting and fine tuning with pry bars to get the molds lined up with top and bottom press plates. Not an easy thing to do when even the small molds weigh a couple of tons or more.
