    As many commands as was received for both the port and starboard engines I figure there must have been a harbor pilot on board guiding the ship out of port
    Never try to tell me it can't be done

    Most WW11 battle ship steersmen were in a small compartment away from the bridge with no outside windows, they simply steered a compass bearing.
    This was certainly the case with HMAS Vixen and the steersman's compartment was no more than about 5' square.

    Seems like most of those components would have to be externally lubricated, perhaps as the engine is running?
