Tank cage armor - photo

I know tankers are weird critters, but seriously, what are the cages for? All I can think of is to create a false triggering point for contact shaped charge munitions (RPG) to detonate off the turret surface, rather than in contact... but I honestly thought turrets weren't that weak. given the cage is mostly "above" - is there a dropped contact munition to defend against?

Try not to think of the flimsy angle iron cages as armor so much, as a false outline structure for concealment once the tank is on a firing location. Just toss some brush from the general area over the framework and the tank becomes part of the landscape. With camouflaged netting and a thick enough layer of brush add in a few hundred sand bags to reasonably protect you from small arms fire and you have an area on top of the tank to stretch out a little better than inside of the tank.
