when we were kids we would just grab hold of the chain that held the tailgates on pickups closed and get pulled along for miles on end. Very handy way to get through some of the deep sandy roads or to hitch a ride to town 8 miles away the older farmers hardly ever drove over 35 to 45 MPH but it was still a lot less pedaling and much faster way yo get to town and not be tired when you arrived

I used to ride a bicycle 15 miles each way to school every day and yes, no helmets, elbow guards, knee pads, or all the other things deemed essential today.
I recall one time I went straight over the handlebars because I'd just fitted a fixed wheel sprocket and forgot when going down a slight downhill I stopped peddling.
Power assisted take-off. Fortunately on this occasion, because it was cold, I was wearing motorcycling gauntlets which took the brunt of the landing.
