When the squirrels get the transformer in my back yard, it is a single "POP" and the power goes out.
Why are there so many explosions in this example?

That's what happens when you replace the fuses with a piece of pipe...

One reason for so many "pops" is the fact that that is cluster of 4 or 5 transformers and I'm sure the first one threw debris that shorted all the others. Also all that smoke is more conductive than clean air and causes more arcing.
