seems like a lost opportunity there to make the magnet switchable via pole switching, or electric means so the workers don't have to pull the recovered metal off by hand. great to remove the hazards off the roadway, but not too happy about adding hazards to the workers when cleaning up (eg what if the magnet picked up a razor blade or needle)

How does so much steel rubbish end up on a highway? Is it on a route to a recycling plant or dump?

Quite a lot, when they mag-swept our local motorway they ended up with several pounds of steel screws, bolts etc per mile, traffic tends to pick it up in the tyres and push it to the shoulder IF it doesn't puncture the tyre, I've had a 10mm bold in a motorcycle back tyre before now, droppings from god know who's vehicle.

We had a Polish builder living down the road for a while, he'd sweep out his van every weekend, leaving wood and sheet metal screws in the road, after several neighbours got punctures and a few wrecked tyres he discovered it wasn't such a good idea as someone (not me) picked them up then screwed them into HIS tyres treads and sidewalls.

Mag might work for normal steel, but not brass or stainless, so not every thing would get picked up anyway.

Back when I was in high school I drove this absolute rust bucket Nissan pickup. I was driving down the road one day and lost about a 12" section of frame. I heard a thump then watched it go bouncing down the road, end over end.
