Those were real common when I was a kid in the late 40's and early 50's, they worked very well.

Yes the ideal place to mount them was under the cabinet over the sink that way if you dropped the jar the mess was easier to clean up The problem with that though was the height of the cabinet you had to not only reach half way across the sink but your hands were above eye level. Grandma had hers mounted under the top cabinets over the counter top and usually folded a few towels on the counter incase she happened to let a jar slip out of her hands it wouldn't break and most of the time she would manage not to spill much of the contents 70 something year old arthritic hands couldn't always hold on to things well.
