I believe its the phosforic acid that actually kills the rust. I use it diluted in my shop to remove flash rust, also evaporust etc may be using it not sure but don't go using it bare handed it will damage the paws something horrible

I use it on my old motorcycle and it works great. The foil is soft so it does not damage the crome it seems to remove the bumps and fill the gaps and the acid in the coke helps remove rust

Iv'e used Milk Stone Remover (cattle item found in many farm and tractor outlet stores) for this and it works very well also.
Yep, Coke has phosphoric acid, same as Naval jelly and evapoprust. You can also get phosphoric acid at beer and wine making suppliers.
one thing that Coke has is phosphoric acid as well as the carbonation from CO2.
I would think that the aluminum is acting as a mild abrasive. Aluminum metal quickly oxidizes to aluminum oxide when exposed to air.
