Vintage tools display boards

These old tools, which are still fit for purpose, have been permanently attached, with iron wire, to a rough, reclaimed pine board, once part of a garage cabinet. The tools were machine brushed and wiped over with linseed oil.

All these discarded tool handles were cut lengthways and glued to a pine board, which was salvaged from a wardrobe, too broken to be repaired.

These old saw handles, after buffing, have been screwed to an unused but surplus kitchen cabinet door.

It would be ever so nice if one of those tool boards could be hung in every elementary classroom so the kids could learn the names and function of each tool. It might require teaching the teachers first since we're well into the second generation of the dumbing down of our populations.

I began my teaching career in 1974 and saw how technical education was reduced to little more than the colouring in of pictures. By the time my children started secondary education ie. after 6 years of primary school, it was called “Design and Technology”. Can you design something if you do not know how it is made? And “what is Technology?” asked the deputy head at a staff meeting. “It is applied science,” I told him. But nowhere did I see science applied in D & T classes which I had to cover.

My eldest took her D & T exam at 16. One question she remembers was, “How would you shape acrylic?”

If you remember when sugar tongs were in hardware stores, you certainly are!

I second teaching the teachers, when my son was in school (late 90's) he had a teacher who did not know what a wheelbarrow or a spatula was!

Well, all might be happy to know that at least one such facility is on the rise, though centered on an older group. Since 'learning' isn't restricted to age, creating interest and providing lab to utilize that knowledge is the goal.
