    In the Mesta foundry like other foundry' which produced very large castings often made their intricate casting molds directly in the packed dirt floor casting many parts at the same time. They would haul the crucible of molten metal over the mold and complete the pour. What is shown is most likely the castings after the top part of the mold has been removed and the sand swept away.

    Yup. That is what is going on. They are placing the pattern cores. The areas where you do not want metal in the casting.
