Good tool, I have the same core hot-air unit and 'welding' tips at work for plastic fab work, mainly on chemical workstations.

So is there another tool that slices it off flush?

I think the hot air is softening the groove and also melting the vinyl filler, and the tip is hot so it just smooths it out as it goes.
