I can remember them. Miles of black 25mm paper tape, a Friden Flex-i-Writer, and snowdrifts of tiny paper discs.
Anyone ~60 plus managed to get one of those in their eye, one time or another.

Primitive technology indeed, but satisfyingly "hard" against EMPs from nearby nuclear weapon bursts.

Kept clean and dry, paper had a decent service life. Short of a fire, or mice, little could go wrong.
Provided the leader end was spooled into the reader first........
