On my enormous to-do list is the idea of getting a digital photo frame, and loading it with a bunch of GIFs. I know some of them allow GIFs and/or MP4s, but I still need to research it a bit and experiment with the formats. Excellent gift idea!
Some time ago I used an old tablet PC laptop with the fold back screen as a digital photo frame. I never thought of loading animated gifs to it. Mine just changed photos 2x daily and had a usb motion detector to turn on the screen when someone was in the room. I think it had about a 12" screen.
On my future list is to take the 17" screen from an old imac to use as a digital frame with a raspberry pi and display controller board. Again, animated gifs are a great idea...but maybe it'll take more figuring on my part since the photo I was displaying was the desktop bacground image.
