Boeing could use some of these right now. Only updated...
Actually saw this happen to a kid in shop class in high school. Football player dressed up for homecoming. Knurling a tool handle. The teacher heard him scream and casually went over and stopped the lathe as his head got about 3" from the chuck. Left him there while he explained why this was a bad decision and asked what would have happened if he'd actually been turning something. He walked away and went into his office, got a pair of scissors, and cut the kid's tie off to free him. He could have had a lesson right there on how to reverse the lathe but I think his approach was the best!
All I can think is this scrap drive was everywhere in the fighting world at that time. There were so many interesting autos, tractors and other machinery. And the world lost representative designs. I guess we survived it. Just wish the machinery they used to cut the millions of cubic yard sized limestone blocks for the pyramids could be found.
I think they used lasers. or possiably the exhaust from the starship was used to do it. or the phasers
It had to have been dental floss. That stuff cuts anything...
