Hi marv,, I done something very similar but at the left hand end of the leadscrew to stop swarf migrating into the electrics and controls box on my old mini lathe,,, I think it was the end of a suede shoe brush I used instead of a toothbrush..      (not the brass wire type)... ...Mike..
